This past week saw two further awards at the school and what is particularly noteworthy about these Awards is the frequency in which they have been awarded to the Faythe as the school was awarded a tenth Science Foundation of Ireland - Discover Primary Maths and Science Plaque for Excellence for 'deeper engagement, whole school involvement and external science engagement' and a seventh ‘Green Flag’ which is An Taisce’s marquee environmental management and award programme in both primary and secondary schools across the country who work together for a sustainable future.

On the Science front, and simply put, for the past decade pupils at the Faythe, under the continuous guidance of Ms. Rita Conroy and various teacher volunteers, have ensured Science and Maths are part of everyday school life from Infants to 6th class and scientific skills such as questioning, predicting, observing, measuring and recording are part of everyday school life. All classes continue to enjoy scientific investigations, trips, speaker visits, Science Week, nature walks and shore-line walks normally conducted by the incredibly knowledgeable volunteers from the South End Family Resource Centre while one of the highlights this year was the school by the Science Workshop conducted by ‘The Mad Scientist – Paul Furey’ in March.

While last Tuesday, Deputy Principal. Anne Griffin-Jones, SNA Liz O’Brien, and 5th Class students Jade Malone (from the Green School Committee) and Ben Gulliver (from the Student Council) travelled to Kilkenny to accept the school’s seventh Green Flag. This seventh flag, the international one, is the latest award on a journey that started just after the turn of the millennium. Given the two year cycle to ‘earn’ many of the flags, this concerted effort, driven from day one by Ms. Griffin-Jones, is particularly noteworthy, when one considers that the Junior Infant class when the first flag was applied for are now just weeks away from their Leaving Certificate.

The Faythe School now joins an elite group of just over ten schools in County Wexford who have been awarded this ‘Magnificent Seven!’
