Faythe School Parents' Book Club

Posted by on in Newsletters

The Faythe School Parents' Book Club reviewed the book 'The Choice' by Edith Eger this month.

This book is a true story of how Edith Eger survived against all odds the harrowing experience of despair and cruelty in the concentration camps during WW11.

Edith 'chose' to live a meaningful life to heal herself rather than become consumed by hatred and despair. She became a world renowned psychologist and works with people struggling to overcome traumatic events in their lives.

It is a difficult book to read at times but also so inspiring and empowering. Her message inspires us to choose our own path in life  in terms of our choices, wellbeing and emotions.

Faythe School Parents' Book Club

Posted by on in Newsletters

This month the Faythe School Parents' Book Club read 'Idaho', written by Emily Ruskovich.

This book won the '2019 International Dublin Literacy Award'. A brief background to the plot........ 'One August day a family drives to a mountain clearing to collect birch wood.Something unimaginably shocking happens, an act so extreme it will scatter the family in every different direction'.

There were mixed views on this book. Some people really enjoyed the plot but felt frustrated by the ending. While others didn't enjoy the book at all. It certainly generated a good discussion on the topics in the book. Overall the book scored 5 out of 10. The book chosen for next month's book club read is 'The Choice' by Edith Eger.

Faythe School Parents' Book Club

Posted by on in Newsletters

'When All is Said 'by Irish author Anne Griffin, was the book read and reviewed by the parents' book club this month.

This is the story of Maurice Hannigan, who, over the course of a Saturday night in June, orders five different drinks at the Rainford House Hotel. With each he toasts a person vital to him: his doomed older brother, his troubled sister-in-law, his daughter of fifteen minutes, his son far off in America, and his late, lamented wife. And through these people, the ones who left him behind, he tells the story of his own life, with all its regrets and feuds, loves and triumphs.

Overall the book club members enjoyed the book and felt the story resonated with real life and in particular was a wonderful insight into the life of people years ago. The book scored an average of 7 out of 10 with one member scoring the book 10 out of 10. If you are looking to read a new book, this comes with good recommendation from the Faythe School Parents' Book Club.

School Book Fair

Posted by on in Newsletters

A sincere Thank You to all the children, teachers, parents and grandparents who attended the Book Fair this week. It was a tremendous success.

60% of the total book sales are credited back to the school in books. This year the school can order books up to value of €1,223.10 thanks to the very generous and much appreciated support of the book fair. These books will greatly support and facilitate literacy development both in school and at home.

The smooth running of the book fair was possible with the considerable help of Mag and Audrey, who acted as librarians and cashiers and to Margaret in the office for ensuring all the money balanced. In an era of I-pods and I-pads, it was wonderful to see the excitement of children while they browsed through the numerous books in the book fair.

In the words of Dr. Seuss, ' You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book'.

Congratulations to the all the parents who were presented with their 'Advanced Cook It' programme.

The programme ran for five weeks and was delivered by Davina Dowling. Many thanks to Davina for her expertise and knowledge in the area of healthy eating and nutrition. Each week the parents made tasty and nutritious meals including soup, bread, chicken curry, a vegetarian dish and 'healthy' chocolate brownies. Each parent received a certificate of achievement and a cook book. Well done to everyone and to Maggie who managed to escape the photo! The popularity of this programme is testament to the fact that parents have already signed up for next year

The first gathering of The Faythe School's Parents' Book Club took place on Wednesday.

The book 'A Thousand Roads Home' was the chosen book to launch the book club. We were absolutley thrilled and inspired to have the author of the book, Carmel Harrington present at our book club.

Carmel is an Irish Times best selling author, a regular guest on the Elaine show and a genuine kind and lovely lady. Carmel answered questions from the book club members about the characters and events in her book and spoke openly about life as an author.
